Will Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards see the Green Light of day?
According to Nikki Finke’s Hollywooddeadlinedaily.com website, Quentin Tarantino is in talks with Brad Pitt to star in his long-in-development World War 2 film, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS. The movie is described as a Dirty Dozen-like story about a group of soldiers caught behind enemy lines According to the Hollywood Reporter, Harvey Weinstein will co-produce and Tarantino is shopping the script to at least four big studios including Sony, Warner Bros, Paramount and. Universal for financial backing. Considering the huge financial failure of GRINDHOUSE it will be interesting to see if the studio that backs this project will give Tarantino complete creative control.
Let’s be honest, while Quentin has a big fan base following his movies (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Volume 1&2 and GrindHouse), they haven’t exactly been box office blockbusters – although GrindHouse is his only movie to leave its backers in the red. If Tarantino puts his usual over the top hard R ultra violent spin on the material (and we know that he will) that will most definitely limit the potential box-office as it might alienate the mainstream crowd. Still I think this movie has the potential to be something really special as I have no doubt Tarantino will most certainly assemble a great cast of actors to make this something to look forward to in a big time way. The director would like to begin filming this October for a 2009 release. Latino Review sums up the script online and calls it a masterpiece. Here’s the LINK.
The Return of RoboCop and Red Dawn
According to The Hollywood Reporter, MGM has picked up its pre-production pace on remakes of ROBOCOP and RED DAWN. The trade is reporting that the studio has talked to a handful of directors including Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain) about it’s re-launch of Robocop which. in my opinion. was one of the great genre films produced in the 80s. Its reputation has been somewhat tarnished with the ill conceived Robocop 2 and the childish and barely releasable part 3. Personally. I see a direct remake a mistake by the studio as the original film in this franchise was a brilliant piece of work by its director Paul Verhoeven and a re-launch of the series should acknowledge its existence.
As for Red Dawn. the studio has signed screen writer Carl Ellsworth (Red Eye) to write and Dan Bradley (2nd unit director of Spiderman 2&3) to direct the film. Red Dawn (released in 1984) has remained a popular genre film over the years as it gets a lot of TV air time on the AMC channel and has been a solid seller among older titles on DVD. While the idea of an unsuspecting full blown foreign invasion of the United States will probably play as far fetched as it did in the original, I’m interested as to how they tackle this property for the 9/11 generation.
And Beyond… 10 minutes is not enough Rescue Me (for me) and Give Me My Poseidon!
With a very small selection in terms of original programming to watch this summer, I must say I really do miss Denis Leary’s RESCUE ME on the FX channel. The show, going into its 4th season, will come back for new episodes in March of 2009. Like many others. the program’s production schedule was derailed due to the writers strike. Producers are starting to air 10 minute episodes once a week to give fans a mini fix.
Two years after it theatrical release. there has been no word as of yet whether Warner Bros will ever put out a directors cut extended edition of POSEIDON on DVD. There were strong rumors that there was a 125 minute cut supervised by director Wolfgang Peterson ready to go for its HD-DVD release but it never happened. While it’s a known fact Wolfgang knobbed off a considerable amount of the back story and at least one action sequence in order to create a frantic pace, many fans, including myself, would love to see the longer version of the movie which was shown to test audiences before its May 19, 2006 release. As is, Poseidon clocks in at 90 minutes and is entertaining if looked at purely as an action movie. I would love to see more character development. Note to WB- Please consider an extended edition.
