According to Cinematical, the Weinstein Company has officially announced plans to put a fourth entry in their SCREAM franchise, now currently in development. No word on whether writer Kevin Williamson, director Wes Craven or series star Neve Campbell will have any involvement. The first three films were very popular and, for the most part, very inventive for the genre. I would have to assume this fourth film will be more of a re-boot and not a direct sequel to the last installment which was released eight years ago. Personally, while I would certainly see a new Scream movie, I wish the horror genre would develop better ideas like last years “The Mist” and “30 Days of Night.” Those two films I really loved. As for the first three Scream movies, I really liked the first two and thought the third was a passable entry.

Staying with the horror genre, I’m very interested to see what Michael Bay’s production company does with the Friday the 13th remake, currently in production. One has to wonder how much interest there is in the Jason Voorhees character. Let’s face it, in 2008 he’s hardly groundbreaking! Now, the original came out in 1980 and it was a very effective slasher film that became a big audience favorite. I remember being pretty scared while watching it in a theater. As we all know it produced Ten sequels and a separate Freddy VS Jason movie (which I really liked). The Friday the 13th remake hits theaters Feb 13, 2009. Watch the Trailer

According to the trade Variety, a sequel to the current action film WANTED is currently being developed by Universal. The original didn’t exactly set up an easy launching pad for a follow up but we’ll see!

Box-office news of interest… Will Smith, once again proving he may be the last of the big time movie stars, with his latest “Hancock” taking in 180 mill overseas, producing an overall total of 344 million in just two weeks. Indiana Jones is proving to be no slouch as its international tally is up to 440 mill for The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That gives it a grand total of 750 mill. I just wish the movie was so much better than it is!
