Mamma Mia looking to become this summer’s Hairspray – Dark Knight Anticipation at Fever Pitch
Universal’s Mamma Mia! has already pulled in 24 mil in a dozen foreign territories including 13 mil in the UK. The movie musical which stars Meryl Streep and Pierce Bronson opens here in the U.S on Friday. I have no doubt there will be a sizeable audience for this movie as it should attract much of the same crowd that made last years Hairspray a big audience favorite. Twenty Two year old Amanda Seyfried beat out over one hundred actresses for the lead role. I remember watching her on the ABC daytime soap All My Children In 2002. She also co-starred in the hit comedy Mean Girls. Her future in movies seems pretty bright.
Have to say I’m a little surprised that Sony is releasing the new Will Ferrell comedy Step Brothers with an R rating considering that Ferrell’s last film the R- Rated Semi- Pro was one of his weakest performing movies after a string of PG-13 hits. It pulled in a weak 33.5mil in ticket sales. Step Brothers should be an interesting test to the staying power of Ferrell’s core audience when it hits theaters July 25th.
Buzz continues to build for Friday’s opening of The Dark Knight as Warner Bros held there world premiere in Manhattan Monday Night at the AMC Lowe’s Lincoln Center on the giant IMAX screen. Many industry analysts are speculating on how much the critically hailed film will pull in this weekend, with some saying in excess of 150 mil. I can’t say what the final number will be, but to me this movie has the type of pre- release water cooler type buzz that I haven’t felt since Jurassic Park opened in 1993.
