Never Met a Zombi I Didn’t Like…

Review of THE DARK KNIGHT- Highly hyped movie delivers in Spades!

It’s always tricky going into a film with the type of hype Warner Bros new Batman movie, The DARK KNIGHT, has received. It almost feels like July 18th, 2008, the day this film opens on a record 4366 screens, should be declared a national holiday.

First, let me point out I’m a big fan of the bat and, based on my love for director Chris Nolan’s Batman Begins, and the tremendous advance buzz, my expectations were mighty high. Having said that, Chris Nolan does not disappoint as The Dark Knight is a highly ambitious and tremendously intense movie going experience that must be witnessed on the big screen. In so many ways director and co-writer Nolan have opened the scope of the comic book movie by such a wide margin that any future films in the genre will have an almost impossible task to outdo it. Although it’s being sold as a pure comic book movie The Dark Knight has the feel of a great crime drama similar in tone to Brian DePalma’s classic 1987 movie “The Untouchables” with Batman and the Joker taking the parts of Elliot Ness and Al Capone.

What makes this film so satisfying is that it plays liked a perfectly executed ensemble piece with all the main characters getting rich and equal screen time. Christian Bale is once again terrific as Bruce Wayne/Batman and really proves there could be no other actor better for the part. The screenplay fleshes out the character’s inner conflict of dealing with the ramifications of the things he’s set in motion. Aaron Eckhart is perfectly cast in the role of Gothams white knight; district Attorney Harvey Dent, who ultimately evolves into Two-Face (the make up work is stunning). I was pleasantly surprised how much I loved his story arc of Dent, a man set out to finish the job Batman has started. Eckhart is so good in the role that you’ll actually wish he never takes the turn. In terms of Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker, there’s nothing else to be said that hasn’t been said already – it demands to be seen by all movie fans. Nothing in his previous work prepared me for his demented take on the famed character, here written as an insane terrorist. As the story goes on and the criminal threat continues to escalate, the tension mounts to a pulse pounding level and the Joker is the mastermind behind it all. The character is given just the right amount of time on screen and every second he’s on it is absolutely memorizing. There’s one sequence where he’s alone in a room with Gary Odlman’s Lt.Gordon that’s beautifully acted and shot with the director using a brilliant choice of lighting. It’s one of the films best scenes.

Oldman is once again terrific as the conflicted Lt Gordon. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a big upgrade from Katie Holmes in the role of Assistant DA Rachel Dawes and still sweetheart to Bruce. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine once again give the proceedings their usual class as gadget man Lucius Fox, and Alfred, the confidant and butler of Bruce Wayne. The action set pieces are pretty impressive with the highlight being a confrontation between Batman on a high tech bat pod motorcycle and the Joker driving a huge Mac truck. It’s a real showstopper! If there is one minor flaw it might be that the movie goes on a tad too long. At 152 minutes, I wish it were shaved down by about 15 minutes toward the end but that’s a minor point in an overall great movie going experience! POST your comments and let me know what YOU think!

And Beyond… fall TV sitcom news / Emmy nominations

Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler

Associated press has confirmed the Hollywooddeadlinedaily report that that SNL’s Amy Poleher will be joining the cast of the OFFICE spin off show that will air on NBC next season. The 36-year-old comic actress, who just received an Emmy nomination for her work on SNL, co-starred in the moderate hit feature film Baby Mamma alongside Tina Fey this spring. Her star is obviously shining bright these days.

ER

ER

According to TV guide, actress Courtney Cox will do a 3 episode story arc on SCRUBS. The sitcom will air on the ABC network this fall, moving over from the NBC network. Cox’s show DIRT, which was canceled after two seasons on the FX cable channel, was a slimy piece of television that had some entertainment value but always seemed below Cox’s level of quality, particularly considering her claim to fame was the landmark sitcom “Friends.” Speaking of NBC, it will be interesting as to how they handle the last season of the long running ER. While the show is not as good as it was in its heyday it still is a quality drama that I continue to watch. Original cast member Noah Wyle will be back for 4 episodes, reprising his role of Dr. Carter. It will be interesting to see if George Clooney will return as Dr Ross for the show’s final episode. I still believe Clooney’s work on ER was as good as anything he’s ever done. An appearance by him would certainly acknowledge that fact!

Grey's Anatomy

Grey's Anatomy

There’s been a whole lot of rumbling lately about the status of Emmy winning actress, Katherine Hegel’s, future on the hit ABC show Grey’s Anatomy. Whether she wants to stay or whether producers want her to go, I think the show needs her as she’s a big part of its overall chemistry. Despite a strike-shortened season last year, Grey’s remained one of TV’s most entertaining dramas. Hegel certainly has a bright future in movies (She’s already scored big in Knocked Up) but Grey’s Anatomy is one heck of a day job and her staying put is a win-win for all involved, especially the fans of the show.

Lost

Friday Night Lights

Friday Night Lights

Glad to see “Lost” and “Dexter” getting Emmy nominations for best Drama as I love both programs. Personally, I continue to feel that Lost is one of the greatest pieces of television ever produced. On the flip side, I was pretty disappointed to see that NBC’s Friday Night Lights was completely ignored. It’s hard to believe the voting members actually watch the show because it’s easily one of the 5 best dramas on the air! The creative team behind Lights has produced high quality episodes week in and week out for two straight seasons. The show certainly deserved some recognition. It was also great to see actor Michael Emerson, who plays the fascinating Benjamin Linus on “Lost,” get a best supporting actor nod. He is simply great in the role and he’s turned that character into something very special.

Thoughts of the day

RoboCop

RoboCop

I’m glad to hear that MGM’s new Robocop movie will be more of a sequel and not a remake – that according to Bloody-Disgusting. Like I said when the re-launch of this franchise was announced, it would be a big mistake for the creative team involved to act like Paul Verhoeven’s 1980 original didn’t exist. The film is just too good. The site also reports that the studio is close to signing director Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain) to helm the project. Hopefully all involved will keep the same tone and thought provoking creativity that the Verhoeven original had and produce a film with the R-rating that this franchise should maintain.

Will Ferrell

Will Ferrell

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Will Ferrell (Talladega nights) has attached himself to what sounds like a pretty interesting high concept comedy titled “2-Face”. It’s described as an edgy story about a guy with a split personality; one a racist and the other a bleeding heart liberal. This sounds like a project with a lot of potential.

Megan Fox

Megan Fox

Let’s touch on an interesting story making the rounds about the fact that actress Megan Fox was ordered by director Michael Bay to gain ten pounds before she started filming the sequel to Transformers. According to Fox News, evidentially Ms Fox lost too many pounds and looked a wee bit thin after being asked to lose weight for her last film, Jennifer’s Body. I don’t know what to say about this, other than it gives me a chance to post a picture of her on the site and when I do that the world always seems to be just a little bit brighter! Oh, by the way, Transformers 2 hits theaters next summer!

Finally, today I must admit I’m excited because I’ll soon be reporting on the film everyone’s been talking about for what now seems like forever – and that’s SPACE CHIMPS! Sorry I mean The DARK KNIGHT. Fresh from the Midnight Opening I’ll be giving you my thoughts today.
