PITT signs on to star in TARANTINO’S INGLORIOUS BASTARDS but should we really be excited ?
Jubilation seems to be running rampant on the net with news of Brad Pitt officially signing on to Quentin Tarantino’s new WW2 film INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, as any news regarding a Tarantino project seems to get a ton of attention. So is all the whoopla over Tarantino justified? I think the answer to that question is certainly debatable. One has to ask – is the Tarantino legend bigger than the reality of his body of work. Well, there’s no doubt Tarantino deserved his acclaim for his Oscar nominated film PULP FICTION back in 1994, although I’d like to make note that the Ving Rhames rape scene, straight from the mind of the director himself, is still pretty creepy stuff. Personally I didn’t get his KILL BILL films, as they did little for me and their sadistic overtones were distasteful at best. I really enjoyed Grind House but thought Robert Rodriquez’s PLANET TERROR was more fun than Quentin’s DEATH PROOF, despite his inspired casting of Kurt Russell as stunt man Mike.
So, will I be excited to see Inglorious Bastards? I will say Yes, but cautiously so. I will not be drinking the Quentin Tarantino cool aid unconditionally anymore. He needs to show he can do something really special – he owes it to his following. After reading part of the Inglorious Bastards script there’s no doubt, at least in my mind, that this will NOT be material geared at the mainstream crowd. That’s okay as long as his ever present sadism isn’t so over the top that he alienates just about everybody except the handful of people who seem to dig just about anything he attempts to do. Bottom line – Inglorious Bastards hits theaters sometime next year and, despite my doubts, I‘m really curious to see how this one turns out!
