ANTHONY EDWARDS return to ER triumphant
NBC’s ER received a ratings boost (9.8 million viewers – the show’s largest audience in a year) Thursday night with the return of one of its most beloved cast members, ANTHONY EDWARDS. His return as Dr. Mark Greene in a flashback episode was very well done and highly enjoyable if you have been a fan of the show from the beginning. The episode’s story, explaining how Angela Bassett’s Dr Cate Banfield became the ice cold, control freak, she is today, was both well thought out and emotionally involving. Her five year old son had died 6 years before at County General on a night Dr Greene was the attending on call. She recalls how things played out while trying to save a little girl who has entered her ER in the present day.
Once Edward’s appears on screen, twenty-seven minutes in, it’s easy to see how the program always belonged to him. While George Clooney, Noah Wyle and Eriq La Salle all did memorable work over the years, I’ve always felt that ER was Edward’s show. His confident presence grounded every scene he appeared in and last night’s return solidified that fact. Edward’s story arc, which features his characters battle with brain cancer in the 2002 season, was one of television’s finest moments, culminating in the classic ORION IN THE SKY episode which is my all time favorite ER hour. As a fan of the show, it was nice to see an old friend and remember how special he was. Watch Edward’s return episode titled HEAL THYSELF in its entirety HERE.
