Never Met a Zombi I Didn’t Like…

Trailer to THE WRESTLER

wrestler-poster-final-medsiFox Searchlight has released the trailer to director Darren Aronofsky’s THE WRESTLER, a film that received raves when it premiered at the Toronto film festival a few months ago. Major praise has gone to the film’s star, MICKEY ROURKE, who could emerge as a major contender for a best actor Oscar. This also has the potential to be a fascinating human interest story if he were to get nominated, considering his career downfall over the last two decades. This trailer looks really good with a Rocky Balboa type feel to it, featuring a Wrestling backdrop instead of the boxing one. Rourke’s life scars certainly fit the part. The Wrestler opens in a limited release Dec 17 before going wider this January.

A LOOK back at the career of JOHN CARPENTER

halloweentitleWith word that JOHN CARPENTER is in pre-production on his first film in 7 years (a prison thriller titled RIOT, starring Nicolas Cage), I thought I would take a look back at one of the more interesting voices in movies. Carpenter’s main claim to fame is a guy with the ability to create some very memorable films on very low budgets. With a career that now spans over thirty years, Carpenter has had some big ups and downs but his overall body of work is certainly admired by his legions of fans, including myself. Early on Carpenter had the Midas touch as an independent filmmaker. After getting the attention of Hollywood, including George Lucas with the barely released DARK STAR – a very low budget sci-fi film produced for $60,000 in 1976, John went on to direct ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. Working with a budget of just $100,000, and using the inspiration of Howard Hawks classic western Rio Bravo, John crafted a really good film that was both exciting and suspenseful. Not only did he direct the film, he also wrote and performed the musical score. While reviews were somewhat split at the time, the film is now regarded by many as a minor classic in its genre. I agree, as it’s a terrific movie.

After directing the television suspense thriller, SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME, starring Lauren Hutton in 1978, Carpenter would move on to perhaps his biggest claim to fame, HALLOWEEN. Working on a budget escapefromnyposterof just $320,000, John would create one of the most influential horror films ever produced and help spearhead a franchise that is still cranking out films to this day. While he only directed the original, Carpenter did have involvement in HALLOWEEN 2 as a producer and, reportedly, did re-shoots himself. He was asked to helm Halloween H20 in 1998 but declined. Carpenter’s score for Halloween is easily one of the most recognizable in the history of motion pictures and greatly added to that film’s status as a classic.

After producing and directing the critically acclaimed ELVIS, for ABC; his first collaboration with actor Kurt Russell, Carpenter would go back to the horror genre with THE FOG in 1980. While the film opened to mixed reviews it was very profitable grossing 21,000,000 on a budget of just $1,000,000. I’m a big fan of The Fog. The film stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Tom Atkins and has great atmosphere and enough really good moments to make it a solid film. Carpenter has said many times he’s quite proud of it.

Carpenter would team up with Kurt Russell for a second time in ESCAPE FROM NY in 1981. At the time it was an interesting casting choice because Russell, known for Disney films like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, was really being cast against type. It’s safe to say that Russell’s casting as anti-hero, Snake Plissken, changed the course of his long career as he was never looked at the same way again. Escape would go on to gross $50,000,000 worldwide on a budget of they_live_poster300$7,000,000 and remains a huge cult classic to this day. With Escape, Carpenter showed his knack for creating really cool sets under the restraints of relatively low budgets. Much of the film was shot in St. Louis, Missouri. Carpenter and Russell would return for a sequel in 1996 entitled ESCAPE FROM LA which was really a quasi-remake. While fairly entertaining, the film bombed at the box-office.

In 1982, Carpenter’s sci-fi horror film THE THING (his third pairing with Kurt Russell) was released the same weekend as Steven Spielberg’s E.T. and did a quick fade from theaters. Over the years, the movie has been rediscovered on VHS, Laser Disc and now DVD and many, including myself, regard it as a classic in its genre. The film’s use of stop motion effects, created by the late Stan Winston, are highly inventive.

After directing the solid feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s, CHRISTINE, in 1983 which produced moderate box-office results, John received his greatest critical acclaim with the big studio film, STARMAN in 1984, although it too only performed moderately at the box-office. The film’s star, Jeff Bridges, was nominated for an Oscar. Carpenter would go the studio route once again with the way ahead of its time BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, pairing him up with Kurt Russell for the fourth time. The film, which mixed many different genres, confused audiences and critics alike and bombed at the box-office (grossing $11,000,000 on a budget of $25,000,000), altering Carpenter’s career for years to come. Only many years later would fans come to appreciate its inventiveness.

After the failure of this film, Carpenter would go back to his low budget roots with PRINCE OF DARKNESS starmanin 1987 and THEY LIVE in 1988 for Alive films. I thought Prince of Darkness was an interesting movie despite its incoherent storyline. As for They Live, I love it. The film, shot on a budget of just $3,000,000., was sort of a re-working of Invasion of the Body Snatchers but it also took a hard shot at America’s culture of greed. Considering the fact that I was a huge fan of Wrestler RODDY PIPER, I was thrilled with his casting as the film’s lead, His character is never mentioned by name in the story, only in the credits as JOHN NADA. They Live has built a very strong cult following over the years and many regard it as one of Carpenter’s most thought provoking movies.

As for the 90’s, Carpenter’s career was mostly forgettable with big budget studio films, MEMOIRS OF THE INVISIBLE MAN starring CHEVY CHASE (solid first half, weak second), IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (interesting but not totally successful), the awful VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED, ESCAPE FROM LA (quite watchable) and VAMPIRES (a film I didn’t like at all). In 2001 Carpenter returned for the ho-hum GHOST OF MARS and hasn’t done much since. Let’s hope that John has a few more tricks up his sleeve and delivers something memorable with his next film RIOT.  With a 30 year body of work under his belt, and a lot of memorable moments in cinema, I will put JOHN CARPENTER into the Entertainment Today and Beyond HALL OF FAME. Trailer to NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH

nothing-but-the-truth-movieThis is the newest film from ROD LURIE who last helmed the little seen but well worth viewing 2007 movie, Resurrecting the Champ (Josh Hartnett, Samuel L. Jackson). In Nothing But the Truth, Kate Beckinsale stars as a Washington DC reporter who faces jail time for outing a CIA agent while refusing to reveal her source. I really like Laurie’s work. While his movies haven’t been box-office winners, he has delivered quality films. His 2001 film, THE LAST CASTLE, is a favorite of mine and, if you’re a Robert Redford fan, a must see! Laurie is a former film critic who’s very opinionated. His commentary on the DVD of Resurrecting the Champ is as entertaining as any I’ve ever heard – he’s totally open and honest about the filmmaking process. It makes for a great listen. Entertainment Today and Beyond: NEWS and OPINION – shorts by Chuck Curry

australia1The running time for Baz Luhrman’s AUSTRALIA reportedly clocks in at 165 minutes. Look for reviews to start leaking this week as critic screenings will take place here in the States starting Wednesday. I’m really looking forward to this film as I think the latest trailer is as good as any I’ve seen since Titanic back in 1997. It’s both powerful and moving. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman star in the epic love story set against the backdrop of WW2. It hits theater Nov 26.

day-the-earth-4I have to think that Fox’s THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL remake, starring Keanu Reeves, will be a big attraction when it hits theaters Dec 12. I would expect the same audience to turn out that made Will Smith’s Sci-fi actioner I AM LEGEND a huge hit in the same time period last year. This new poster certainly is cool!

It was nice to see that actor Robert Downey Jr. was Entertainment Weekly’s entertainer of the year. Given that Downey elevated Ironman to a very high level then turned in a blisteringly funny performance in Tropic Thunder, he’s certainly a deserving candidate.

darkknightawards-440x233Lionsgate has set an Oct 23, 2009, release date for SAW VI. Considering the low budget and the solid box-office of these films, it appears there is no end in site. Lionsgate has confirmed that stellenfact. Warner Bros has started its marketing push to get THE DARK KNIGHT a best picture nomination by running ads in the trades. My gut feeling tells me it will get that nomination.

Kudos to actor Stellen Skarsgard (Exorcist the Beginning) for his terrific guest appearance on HBO’s Entourage. His take as an egotistical director of the fictional movie Smoke Jumpers, which costars series character Vinnie Chase (Adrian Grenier) is Emmy worthy, making Sunday’s episode a classic. Entourage is having a great season.

New STAR TREK trailer

trektrailer2top-440x187Here’s a look at the new TRAILER to Paramount pictures STAR TREK film, hitting theaters May 8, 2009. Reaction on the net has been somewhat split but I like what I see. Considering the legacy of this franchise, this re-boot, by director JJ Abrams, will be scrutinized heavily by the older but very loyal fan base. While not a hard core Trekkie myself, as a heavy movie memorabilia collector I attended numerous Star Trek conventions years ago and have great memories of them. Make no mistake, Star Trek to many is like a religion. The core fan base is very protective of the Trek universe and you haven’t experienced life until you’ve seen grown men dressed as Klingons!

While I have complete confidence in Abrams (Lost, Mission Impossible 3) to deliver a solid product, I have to wonder if fans will buy actor Chris Pine as the new Captain Kirk. He clearly does not have the screen presence of William Shatner, but I guess I’ll have to defer judgment until the movie is released. Zachary Quinto, who plays Syler on NBC’s Heroes, looks pretty good as Spock, and it’s clear that Abrams wants to give this new Trek film an epic feel, similar to Richard Donner’s 1978 classic Superman. The voiceover in the trailer is a clear indication of that path. It should be interesting to see if this new take on Star Trek can expand on the core crowd. I think it will.  Take a LOOK

QUANTUM OF SOLACE opens HUGE – my feelings on the film and franchise

quantum7Quantum of Solace, the 22ND James Bond film, had the biggest opening in the series history this weekend, pulling in a whopping $70.4 million dollars here in the States. This far out-paced the previous record holder, Die Another Day, which opened with $47 million in 2002.

After seeing Quantum over the weekend I’m now convinced that this is a film and franchise that will divide moviegoers for quite some time. Fans of the Jason Bourne movies, which Quantum of Solace gladly apes, will like the gritty humorless Craig who plays Bond like an indestructible killing machine with little to no personality or much morality. The other side of the fence will harkin back to the days of Connery, Moore and even Pierce Bronson, who gave moviegoers a much more fun, sometimes over the top escapism. While watching Quantum of Solace I felt somewhat detached as director Marc Foster, taking over for Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), stages the action sequences in such an aggressive, quick-cut, hyper-kinetic fashion that it’s hard to tell what’s going on at times. The story, where Bond seeks revenge for the death of Vesper (Eva Green), the woman he loved, is somewhat thin and slightly confusing as the film jumps from one location to another.

Still it was serviceable enough if all the films other problems weren’t there. Mathieu Amalric plays the villain, Dominic Greene, a ruthless businessman who is part of a mysterious organization. While far from the best Bond baddie he was effective enough for me to have a rooting interest in his demise. Craig is no doubt the most physically oriented actor to play 007, but the producers decision to make the character void of much emotion, with no sense of humor and a man of very little dialogue, really started to grow tiresome this time around for me. The Bond character with Craig is more of an anti-hero who is hard to root for since we, the audience, barely know him, other than acknowledging he’s one angry guy. There’s also no Q or any nifty gadgets, just a pretty raw Bond that’s being sold to a new generation. At a running time of 1hour and 46 minutes, the movie feels long because it’s never an absorbing affair. On the plus side, Judi Dench is once again terrific as M. She continues to gives the proceedings a classiness that is always appreciated. It will be interesting to see what the brain trust behind the franchise will have in store next time around. You can only go joyless for so long before that huge audience starts to erode and pretty quickly! I give Quantum of Solace 2 zombies out of 4.

New WATCHMEN trailer

watchmen_galleryteaserWarner Bros just released this new trailer to its WATCHMEN movie which is scheduled to hit theaters in March. While anticipation for this film, based on the popular graphic novel, is sky high on the internet, the trailer doesn’t do much for me. While clearly ambitious, I don’t like the graphic novel look and I’m not a fan of the use of slow motion. While I wanted to get the same type buzz I received when I viewed the trailer to The Dark Knight, I simply did NOT! Here’s the TRAILER
