Warner Bros to REMAKE 1981 comedy classic, ARTHUR

arthur-postersAccording to the Hollywood Reporter, British comic RUSSELL BRAND (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Bedtime Stories) is developing a remake of the 1981 comedy, ARTHUR, as a potential starring vehicle for himself. Considering Brand walks around looking like he’s half-stoned I guess I can see the appeal of the material, but the thought of it borders on being sacrilegious to me. While there is nothing I can do to stop all the remake insanity that seems to grow worse on a weekly basis, some bother me much more than others.

I’ll never have a problem with remakes that can build on a concept but I have a hard time respecting one where the film clearly belongs to the original actor who starred in it. ARTHUR was russell-brand1DUDLEY MOORE. He was brilliant playing the millionaire playboy lush with a heart of gold. It was Moore’s defining moment on screen and the reason he was nominated for Best Actor Oscar. His chemistry with JOHN GIELGUD, who played his sarcastic butler Hobson, was classic. Brand won’t just be remaking Arthur. In this case, he will be playing with Dudley Moore’s crowning achievement on screen and that is something I can’t respect. This material can not be done any better.

THEY LIVE to be Remade

piperAccording to the Hollywood Reporter, John Carpenter’s 1988 cult classic THEY LIVE is getting the remake treatment. Universal and Strike Entertainment (Dawn of the Dead remake) are in the process of acquiring the rights to the film from Les Mougins who currently holds them with the same plan in mind. I have mixed feelings about the idea of remaking a film I’m very fond of.

they_live_poster300Growing up, I was a big fan of its star, Roddy Piper, watching him wrestle at many live events. I remember being really excited when I heard Carpenter cast him in the movie. The story, sort of a reworking of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with strong social commentary, had Piper playing a down-on-his-luck homeless construction worker who stumbles onto a pair of special sunglasses which enable him to see the world as it is, with aliens controlling humanity.

While promoting the film in 1988 Piper used to say that Carpenter, who had met him while attending Wrestlemania 3 in Detroit, chose him for the role of John Nada because there were no real men left in Hollywood. Piper may have had a point! Even though I’m skeptical of most remakes, I can see an updated version, with its central themes of subliminal advertising and elitism, working present day. While the original film didn’t light the box-office on fire, it has garnered a very strong following on DVD and cable over the last twenty years, so should attract an audience. Piper’s infamous line in the film, “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass and I’m all out of bubblegum” is classic. Carpenter will exec-produce the project. THEY LIVE TRAILER
