The WATCHMEN hype
With Watchmen reaching the boiling point on most movie blog sites, I must admit I still don’t get it. I haven’t read the graphic novel the film is based on so I can only base my opinion on what I see from the trailers and TV spots the studio has put out. Now, at this very late stage of the game, it’s clear Warner Bros has done a very uninspired job of marketing this Zach Snyder directed film. Either that or their hands are tied because the movie is just a completely visual experience and they can’t for the life of them flesh out any character development or true story arc to attract the non fan-boy crowd. So what’s the point of spending millions and millions of dollars marketing the film to the very people who will see it no matter what! It’s apparent they do not have an angle for the people who have never heard of Watchmen.
For those claiming that Watchmen will rival The Dark Knight’s box-office… you’re nuts! Not a chance. Watchmen is rated R and way too inside. I doubt I’m wrong. The average moviegoer is not big on slow motion photography with a stylist’s look. There’s also nothing in the trailers that gets my adrenaline flowing. When Warner Bros first released the trailer to The Dark Knight, people in theaters went WOW. I simply don’t hear much reaction when the Watchmen trailer comes on. I really don’t.
It just feels like a totally inside thing, and that’s quite a risk for the studio who has sunk so much money into the film and advertising. Past history has proven that the internet movie crowd can get it wrong – Snakes On A Plane and Zack and Miri Make A Porno is proof of that. While comparing Watchman to these two films is not totally fair, it’s an example of how the internet cheerleaders can be dead wrong. While I think Watchmen will open well ($35-$50 million), I would be very surprised if it’s a through the roof blockbuster simply because I don’t see the mass audience for this material. Remember, not all superhero related films are hits. Go to Box-Office Mojo and type in “The Spirit” for proof of that. While I’m not rooting against Watchmen (I’d really like it to be good), I’m just not blinded or in the bag to be so naïve to the reality of what I’m witnessing.

Possible WAR GAMES remake and FRIDAY the 13th Review
According to Production Weekly, Leonardo Dicaprio’s production company is looking to do a reboot of the classic 1983 thriller, War Games. The original John Badham techno thriller was a beautifully executed movie that continues to be a big fan favorite to this day. I can’t see it being done better and any casting director would be hard pressed to find a substitute for the unique screen personality of Matthew Broderick. He really had it going during that decade with this film, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Max Dugan Returns and Project X. The whole remake-reboot thing has gotten completely out of hand as there’s no need revisit most of these films that Hollywood continues to hijack in order to make an easy buck.

Speaking of reboots, Friday the 13th opened to $43,585,449 over the four day President’s Day weekend. Considering the fact that the last standalone Jason film, Jason X in 2002, grossed just $13,121,555 (the lowest of the series) in its entire theatrical run this was a pretty impressive feat. While watching the film it really made me realize how times have changed. When I saw the original Friday the 13th back in 1980 people would scream at the screen, truly scared by what they were seeing. The crowd I saw this new reboot with on Saturday night pretty much laughed every time Jason took someone out. With the dramatic increase in screen violence over the past decade, I guess most movie goers are so desensitized that they’re hard pressed to find anything truly scared anymore.
Overall, I found this new Friday the 13th film to be a good, but not stupendous, entry in the franchise. Considering it was directed by Marcus Nispel, who helmed the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, the film felt like I was watching a Leatherface story without his extended family. It was a sleek looking effort with some imaginative kills in the first half ( the arrow through the head during the boat dock scene was the film’s best) but I felt things got a little lazy in the second half where much of it was pretty predictable – surprisingly so. I also felt the screenwriters dropped the ball on the origin of the Hockey mask as Jason just literally finds it lying on the floor in a room. While I didn’t expect him to find it in a hockey arena, I did expect more thought to go into what could have been a memorable moment.
In all honesty, it’s hard to really analyze any of the Jason films with a critical eye as they are what they are. For the most part this film works for what’s its trying to do. Considering each entry has really been a product of its time, this interpretation is no different. Parked beside the original films, I’m partial to “Jason Lives” (1986) as I really enjoyed that installment. I would give this new Friday the 13th film 3.25 zombies out of 5. It was far from perfect, but I still had a good time. While fans were pretty energized this time, I think interest will drop off substantially next time around for the inevitable sequel, as the ‘been there – done that’ feeling will dominate once again.
TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN Extended Teaser Trailer
This is the trailer Fox released of their second installment in the Transformers franchise this past weekend. One of summers most highly anticipated films, this one has a much darker feel and it’s certainly more intense. While still just an extended teaser, there’s more than enough here to get a feel for how big in scope this sequel will be. I’m a fan of the original and look forward to this follow-up. Take a LOOK
I LOVE YOU, BETH COOPER Trailer
I find this of interest because it’s directed by Chris Columbus, who has delivered a handful of terrific movies including Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, the first two Harry Potter films and Gremlins (wrote the screenplay). While his luck hasn’t been nearly as good over the last few years it appears he’s trying to change that with this teen sex comedy starring Hayden Panettiere (Heroes). If she’s the next big thing in the business Hollywood is in big trouble. She’s certainly pretty but I usually prefer women over 5 feet tall. Anyway, I Love you, Beth Cooper hits theaters July 10.

My view on the Wachowski Bros possible involvement in WB SUPERMAN Franchise
With rumors flying that the Wachowski Bros, of Matrix fame, have been offered the Superman franchise over at Warner Bros, one has to wonder if that would be a good idea or bad. With the superhero film still being the hottest commodity in Hollywood, the studio certainly want to keep the man of steel flying on the big screen but there’s no doubt they are also still somewhat shell-shocked at the over all box-office of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. It pulled in $391,081,192 worldwide on a reported production budget of $291,000,000 (that according to Boxofficemojo.com.). While not awful, it’s still a far cry from The Dark Knight’s almost billion dollar worldwide gross.
As for the movie itself, there was a clear disconnect between critics and the general movie going audience. On Rotten Tomatoes, Superman Returns has a 77% positive rating, with many reviews being outright raves. Unfortunately the public didn’t see it the same way. Many fans complained of a several different things; namely that the film lacked substantial action, the recycled plotline involving Lex Luthor and real estate; and, its focus on the Clark/ Lois love story was not what many were looking for in a Superman film in the 21 century. While I agree with some of the criticism I still enjoyed the film overall. Although, if I were making the decisions over at the studio, I wouldn’t bring back Singer as I feel the franchise should go in a different direction. Singer, for some reason, felt compelled to make his film an extension of Donner’s original Superman movie and never really updated the concept for a new generation. For that reason alone WB would be wise to find a different vision.
There’s no doubt the Wachowski’s would create strong interest among fans and give the material a very different spin. Whether it would prove to be a success is anyone’s guess but I would be willing to give them the opportunity to create something very special. At this point it’s clearly better to go forward than to live in the past. I still believe Superman is one of movies more viable comic book heroes and, with the right storyline (I would prefer a realistic and very menacing alkita like terrorist type plotline), he would be embraced by movie fans once again in a very big way. At the end of the day, the Wachowski’s will need a really good script to make this a successful endeavor. That will be the most important factor re-booting this franchise once again. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
In a footnote, I finally got a chance to check out the Richard Donner cut of Superman 2 and was stunned how bad it was. Being a huge fan of Superman 2 (I think it’s one of the great superhero films ever made), it’s very apparent that WB made the right choice bringing in director Richard Lester. His 1980 version had the right touch that made the story both fun and exciting. His addition of the Eiffel tower opening sequence is far superior to Donner’s awkward opening which starts off with Lois challenging Clark about whether he might be Superman, which feels rushed and confusing. Lester’s interpretation of that very scene doesn’t take place until 40 minutes in and it’s in a totally different location. The timing is much better and works beautifully. Overall, Donner’s cut turns a great film into a mediocre one at best. His version feels flat and all the fun of Lester’s cut is literally sucked out with a way too serious overtone. Being a fan of Donner’s work, and his original Superman film, I must admit I was stunned with his vision of the material and I’m glad it never saw the light of day – unless you buy the DVD of course, which I did.
TAKING OF PELHAM 123 TRAILER
This trailer to Tony Scott’s remake of the 1974 classic hijacking thriller actually looks pretty good. The one thing it has going for it is Denzel Washington, one of the most appealing actors working in movies today. If you haven’t seen the original, do so as it one of the 1970’s very best films.
