Never Met a Zombi I Didn’t Like…

Weekend Box Office Results

Hell BoyUniversal got a better than expected opening out of HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY as it pulled in a solid 35.9 mill in its first weekend in release. One has to wonder how much of its audience is front loaded and whether this sequel will be able to build any real momentum going forward with summers most highly anticipated movie opening next week. That’s The Dark Knight, another film in the same super hero genre. Sony’s Hancock held up fairly well. Despite a very mixed reaction to the film’s third act twist, the Will Smith off-beat super hero vehicle dropped off a reasonable 47%. It pulled in 33 mill, giving it a two week total of 165 million. New Line Cinema’s Journey To The Center Of The Earth 3-D opened to an okay but far from stupendous 20.5 mill in business.

The weekend’s other new release Meet Dave starring Eddie Murphy bombed, doing a shockingly poor 5.3 mill. This will be Murphy’s biggest box-office bust since The Adventures of Pluto Nash which did just 7 mill in its entire run back in 2002. I think it might be time for Murphy to stay away from the sci-fi comedy genre! One other box office bit of news of interest; Warner Bros Get Smart is holding up pretty well, taking in 111million in 4 weeks of release having added 7.1 over the weekend. With these numbers the studio is probably thinking about a sequel. Here’s a link to the weekend’s full box-office totals. BOX OFFICE
