Never Met a Zombi I Didn’t Like…

DEPP and BURTON to team up AGAIN? And PLANET OF THE APES to go Blu-ray!

If reports are accurate and Johnny Depp does join Tim Burton in Disney’s new live action version of ALICE IN WONDERLAND, this would mark the seventh time the two have collaborated on a project together. From my point of view all the movies they did together were very good except one and that was CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Depp’s choice to play Wonka as a complete weirdo was a total miscalculation on his part and really sunk an otherwise good movie. The pair’s first film, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, is still one of my all time favorite films. If Depp does sign on for Alice he would play the role of the Mad Hatter. It was confirmed last week that 18-year-old Australian actress, Mia Wasikowska will star in the film playing the role of Alice. The movie will also be shot in Disney digital 3-D and is set for a 2010 release.

Fox has announced it will release its classic PLANET OF THE APES films in the high definition Blu-ray DVD format on November 4th. To this day very few franchises have been as thought provoking as this series. While few would argue that the original film starring Charlton Heston is a bonafide classic, the first two sequels were also pretty compelling. The second installment, BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES has one of the bleakest, but also one of the most compelling endings ever shot for a mainstream studio project and for that I love it. The third entry, ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, was terrific sci-fi, CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES was alright, but the low budget and creatively bankrupt BATTLE OF THE PLANET OF THE  APES ultimately sunk the franchise. Overall these films are a must own for any collection!

  1. i could definately see Depp playing the mad hatter. Charlie and the chocolate factory was just a waste of money. Depp has had much better roles in the past and in my opinion, degraded himself by taking that one on, but the thought of a new alice and wonderland movie does bring a smile to my face. I can’t wait to hear him sing “happy UN-birthday”
