Never Met a Zombi I Didn’t Like…

Moviegoers SCARED off on Halloween WEEKEND and Quantum of Solace SCORES in overseas debut!

It was a pretty shaky ride for theater owners this Halloween weekend as box-office took a big drop week over week, especially on Friday when attendance practically vaporized. Thankfully, like a mid-day rally after a stock market sell-off, things started to stabilize Saturday and Sunday and the numbers recovered somewhat.

Disney’s HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3 wound up grossing $15mill to maintain its number one status for the second straight week. The film was actually off 91% from its opening day on Friday when it grossed just $1.7mill to place fifth. The controversial Kevin Smith comedy, ZACH AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO, wound up grossing $10.7 mill in its opening weekend, to place second after barely registering with an anemic Friday return of just $1.7 mill. This was SETH ROGEN’S worst opening and a possible sign that the masses could be tiring of his one note persona. It also appears that the Weinstein Company, which pushed the envelope a bit going with that title, never recovered from a very erratic marketing campaign.

SAW V scared up another $10.1 mill over the weekend, giving it a ten day total of $45.8. It placed third. While certainly profitable, this franchise appears to finally losing a little edge off its fan base. Clint Eastwood’s period kidnapping drama, THE CHANGELING starring ANGELINA JOLIE, went into wide release and pulled in a better than expected $9.4 mill in business to place fourth. The film opened to somewhat split reviews although, based on exit polls, Universal expects the film to have legs.

Other big box-office news took place overseas as the MGM/Sony 22ND James Bond film, QUANTUM OF SOLACE, opened to a whopping $38.6 mill in business breaking records in the UK, France and Sweden. The highly anticipated film hits U.S theaters Nov 14. This weekend’s Top Ten
