Never Met a Zombi I Didn’t Like…

ENTERTAINMENT TODAY AND BEYOND: News and opinion shorts by Chuck Curry

punisherwarzone_galleryteasLionsGate will have to hope they get a decent opening weekend out of its PUNISHER WARZONE when it hits theaters Dec 12. The troubled film has had bad buzz for months after firing its director. Even worse, the marketing department can’t even cut a compelling trailer – always a sign the final product is just terrible. Even though I didn’t think the 2004 PUNISHER was a great film, I still enjoyed it. THOMAS JANE was solid in the lead and JOHN TRAVOLTA hammed it up pretty good as the film’s villain. Jane wanted to come back for the sequel but left the project once he read the script. This is craziesposternow a franchise that will certainly be put to rest as the character is not viable enough for another re-boot any time in the near future.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, TIMOTHY OLYPHANT (HitMan, Live Free or Die Hard) has signed on to star in the remake of George Romero’s THE CRAZIES. The story is about a small town beset by death and insanity after a plane crashes and releases a secret biological weapon into the water supply. Olyphant will play the town sheriff. In this case I like the idea of a remake. While I love Romero’s original zombie trilogy, his version of the Crazies wasn’t a great film. Romero’s 1973 original was shot on a budget of just $275,000 and its storytelling was suspect at best. The concept is pure B-movie and the casting of Olyphant as the remake’s lead only solidifies that fact. I look forward to seeing what they do with this material. Breck Eisner heath-oscar(Sahara) will helm the project.

Warner Bros has started running ads in Trades to get the late HEATH LEDGER a much deserved Oscar nomination as best supporting actor for his AMAZING turn as the Joker in The Dark Knight. I’m hoping all academy voting members are on the same page and vote for Heath as a supporting actor. In 1989 Jack Nicholson, who appeared to be a shoo-in for his Joker in Tim Burton’s BATMAN, did not get nominated. Upon reflection, many speculate that some voting members cast ballots for Jack as best actor, while others voted for him as best supporting actor, thus splitting the overall vote and canceling out his chances for a nomination in either category. I hope this doesn’t happen this time around. VIEW this terrific ad, courtesy of batman-on-film.com
