FRIDAY the 13th remake expected to open BIG and other HORROR news items
Early fan reviews are starting to pop up on the internet for this weekend’s Friday the 13th remake and, for the most part, they’re pretty positive. The film is reportedly tracking very well and it could easily see an opening in the $30 million+ range. Producers of the movie are already contemplating ideas for a sequel while prepping the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. With casting expected to be announced within a month it will be interesting to see who gets the role of Freddy Krueger. Early word had talk of Billy Bob Thornton but nothing has materialized yet. Whichever actor that takes the part, I can only hope they try to create something a little different with the role as opposed to trying to ape Robert Englund, which would be foolish. He was immortal in the part. This new Nightmare film is expected to be in theaters next year.
In other horror news, Dimension films has released a teaser poster to director Rob Zombie’s sequel to his Halloween remake; this one simply titled H2. While Zombie’s Halloween had some interesting ideas, he was clearly the wrong man for the job. It’s hard to believe he’ll get it right the second time around as his somewhat demented mindset is all wrong for the material.
If there is one improvement he could make right off the bat it would be to establish the Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) character as the film’s central lead right from the start. His original’s biggest and most crucial mistake was being way too top heavy with the Michael Myers character. According to actor Malcolm McDowell, who is not officially signed to reprise his role of Dr Loomis, this follow-up will start off two months after the events of the first film. I don’t like that idea already.
