Never Met a Zombi I Didn’t Like…

Television ROUNDUP, James Bond rumor, Zombie’s HALLOWEEN sequel now in production and AUSTRALIA out on DVD

Between the last few episodes of ER, Friday Night Lights, and the 2 hour installments of Brothers and Sisters and 24, Television has been nothing short of terrific as of late. Noah Wyle’s return to County General as Dr John Carter has been a pleasure, Friday Night Lights never misses a beat with top notch writing week after week. If this program isn’t nominated for best drama come Emmy time, the voting members are simply not watching it. Sunday night’s Brothers and Sisters really ramped things up and, I must admit, when Rob Lowe’s politician character Senator Robert McCallister had a heart attack at the halfway point, I was totally absorbed in the storyline. It was one of the series best. Great job by Lowe as the sequence was realistically done and terrifying to watch. As for the two hour’s of 24 Monday night, it was also great television. While you have to turn your brain off at times and not analyze many of the events too closely, the terrorist takeover of the White House was totally compelling. It was old school fun and exciting! I loved it.  Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer will go down as one of the great TV characters ever created. It’s also a character whose actions and methods will be debated for years to come.

There’s a rumor going around that I don’t believe has much validity (it originated in The Sun) that Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) has been offered the chance to direct the next James Bond film. While a guy like Boyle would be an interesting choice, I still think Daniel Craig has to lighten up on his take of 007. It’s just too serious. One could argue that James Bond is a dated character but with the box-office results of the last two installments, this series is performing better than ever. Personally I would rather see Liam Neeson return in a sequel to his terrific “Taken”. That’s my kind of revenge thriller with a character I can really get into.

Less than a month since the announcement that Rob Zombie would return to direct the sequel to his Halloween remake, principal photography has already begun. My questions: With so little time to develop a fully fleshed out script, is Zombie going to wing it as he goes along? With an August 12 release date on the film which is titled H2, this really feels like a rushed from the get go which is one of the biggest australia_movie_posterproblems that continue to plague the creative process in Hollywood. As I’ve said many times, I don’t feel Zombie is right for this franchise as his demented take on the material is just way too, well… demented. I’m sure Zombie will plug any storyline holes with Blood, lots and lots of Blood.

Out on DVD today is Baz Luhrmann’s Australia. While critical reaction was mixed and the film an under performer at the box-office here in the States, it’s certainly worth watching. I found it to be both an entertaining and very moving experience. Part Western, part War film, with Luhrmann’s blueprint of chance-taking all over it, the movie is a really interesting mix of genres and ideas. While it’s flawed and uneven in the storytelling, it still worked for me and I found it to be one of 2008’s best. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman star. Check it out.

  1. Chuck,
Interesting to read your take on Australia. It was one of those movies that was on my radar for the acting and directing talent, but due to relatively poor reviews and a long running time, I never did catch it in theaters. I plan on taking it in on DVD in the near future though and would hope to enjoy it in the way that you mentioned. I have a suspicion that I might, but we’ll see.
